Communicating The Art And Science of Human Caring: A point of inquiry in the triad of the patient, the person, and the nurse in health care systems

“I feel less of a nurse about how we do things in our profession. I can’t believe how little we care about the person in our patient. I can’t imagine what it must be like for the typical patient who is less identified as a person for human caring. They must be continually be exhausted and depressed.”
The art of nursing is generally considered that part of care that is not grounded in scientifically derived or theoretical knowledge. It is viewed as the aspect of patient care that requires personal insight and intuition, gained by individual nurses through practice and experience. On the other hand, the science of nursing is the rational basis for nursing interventions.

Nursing remains practical and hands-on. Nursing is built upon the fundamental moral commitment of caring. Caring is a human mode of being. To create a caring environment, the nurse need to understand what caring is, how to be caring, and the impact of caring and non-caring on others. Caring must be centered on human action and experience in oneself and in one's patient.

The strength of caring in nursing lies in its commitment to the welfare of the whole person. The nurse constituents are knowledge (theoretical and experiential), judgment, and skill in the practical application of both. There are two other critical components: (1) cognition or thinking ability and (2) emotion or feeling. Likewise, the patient is not only an illness but also and most importantly a person with the two critical components of (1) cognition and (2) emotion. Caring in nursing validates both the nurse and the patient as human and is bi-directional. Bi-directionality allows the patient to mirror the functions of the nurse. The nurse has the opportunity to understand "self" better to be more comfortable with his/her functions in providing the patient with overall better quality and continuity of care as communicated between the so-called “person-to-person” caring experience.

“The relationship between nursing and the patient has become treatment-centered. There is little to no attention paid to the patient's emotional and social needs nor to their particular pain and struggle. The person of the patient is lost and so as holistic caring.”

The nurse needs to first understand his/her own being and nursing identity; then, determine how this self-awareness and insight can facilitate “hearing the patient” and “tailoring the treatment” according to that person's preferences and needs.

Caring and being viewed as a whole person are human needs. It is the position of the nurse, above all, to assist the patient in being cared for in a holistic way. Caring for the person is the medium towards wholeness. The essence of nursing care is the relationship with the patient.

Being in tune with the patient's perspective of how the disease process or health condition has influenced his/her life or how medications and treatments might affect the patient's lifestyle is important to establish during the early development of a caring relationship.

“Nursing should be person-centered. Practice would center on a partnership with the patients through a holistic approach to care.”

Health is a subjective state perceived by individuals about themselves and influenced by what the community they live in think about what is normal.

The environment of the patient had to be more than the patients’ internal environment and the clinical area. If care is to be tailored to meet patient needs, the environment would also need to include emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual dimensions.

Being patient-centered, must be built around each of the five dimensions of the ‘self’ as having physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and spiritual dimensions.

The patient-centered nature of holistic caring allows the patient to identify his/her own problems. The patient and the nurse can then be partners in the human caring experience.

sir, this is a great article.. it tells about the real essence of nursing which is caring. As a filipino, i am proud because i know that every Filipino are born to be caring and hospitable. As a future nurse i learned that to be a nurse is not just to be a nurse, we should not look up to it as a work to gain money, but to make it our lifestyle and a way to help other people. Also i learned that it is important in a patient to nurse relationship to not just help them recover physically but also help them recover emotionally. Thank you sir for sharing the article it to us. :)

It's a nice article that has special message. I agree that a nurse should take good care of his/her patient. But before a nurse cares, he/she should understand first WHAT CARING IS, HOW TO BE CARING and THE IMPACT OF CARING AND NON-CARING ON OTHERS. To show care for others, knowledge is needed but that’s not all because you should have a good heart for your patient. Sick people need a caring nurse for them to easily get well. A nurse has a big role in treating the illness of a patient. As future nurses, we should put on our hearts and minds that we are handling the life of our patient. We should be very careful on the things we’re doing.

Caring for others, especially our family is just like caring our clients. Caring is one of the major reasons why our client is struggling to extend their lives. Just like in cancer patients, they lose hope that they do not have chances to survive. Moreover, by the help of the nurses, they are fighting their illnesses because they know that there are still persons concerned in their conditions and doing their best for them to survive. This is a nice article sir. Hope through this, many students and especially nurses will learned the real essence of their chosen profession.

According to Fundamentals of Nursing by Udan, communication is a process in which people affect one another through exchange of information, ideas and feelings.

Communication is one key to establish rapport, trust, and understanding between a nurse and a client.

Through communication, nurse will be able to learn and get in touch with his/her client and vice versa.

Also, the nurse will be able to gather information about his/her client to know about the client's condition in order to give the proper care he/she needs.

Communication is also a therapeutic way to help a client relieve from worrying, fear, sadness and recover from any feelings of distress.

Just like with my patient in my last day of duty. He had too many problems in life and now he's encountering one again. He's Blood pressure went up high because he is worried with his present condition.

Through communication, I was able to help him relieve from worrying and assured him that things will be fine and that he will be better soon after the medical procedure.

After the talk, he became less worried and was able to stay calm and just go on with the medical procedure in order to be well and healthy again.

The Article tackles with the Triad of the Patient, the Person and the Nurse in the health care system which is the very scope and concern of Nurses...Nurses should not only focus on the patients illness and how to treat it but rather Nurses should approach Clients Holistically...
And consider the Person inside of them to create a more effective, efficient and warm atmosphere between the Nurse and The client.
The process of caring is the very foundation of Healing.

A person treated with merely the purpose of treating is not effective, because the Essence Of treating is Treating with care and skilled knowledged in what you are doing...

Caring is the very heart of a nursing profession...A nurse must not just be equipped with knowledge and skill but also has a deep concern with her patients..upon reading this article I felt proud of myself, that eventhough nursing was my second choice before, I was able to pick it as my first course..God is good and hopefully sir, you would put up more inspiring thoughts on your blog..thank you(",)

the article is nice and making me realize that i should be proud of being a filipino nurse caring not just because of opportunities but because of the essence of caring like how we care our own love ones.
nurses are the warriors against illnesses not assets for economy.
some study nursing for own good not knowing the real meaning of nurse-patient interrelationship.

may these articles expire more filipino student nurses so that they may know the essence of their chosen field and for all filipino nurses that they know the importance of caring, treating illness and establish communication and nurse-patient relationship.

thank you for the info sir

If the person is ill, it is expected that he/she is emotionally disturbed as well. While we help relieve their pain, we should also help them be emotionally stable. One way is to show how we care for them beyond the typical Nursing Intervention and doctor's order. We do not just let them heal physically or mentally, but there is also emotional healing which would really be helpful for the patient's recovery outside the hospital premises. As Nurses, it is important for us to have that great heart to care for others, but I believe it is not anymore a question for Filipino Nurses because Caring is already rooted in our values and traditions.

Regarding communication, I believe that it is a necessity that we talk with our patient once in a while for us to explore their ideas and their feelings. This is not to exploit them, but every piece of information gathered can be useful in helping the patient recover and through communication, spending some time with them would let them feel that they are understood in whatever condition and emotional crisis they are in.

Needless to say, the nursing profession revolves mainly on care for your client. As a caregiver, we should always remember what it feels like being taken care of. By doing so, we would be aware or sensitive enough on how we should be treating our clients, moreover taking care of them.

A nurse is not just about carrying out doctor's orders or getting the vital signs of the patients from time to time, behind that there should be the concern and the care that the patient must experience.

A nurse should not only care for the patient because he/she is a patient instead as a person...holistic..because if we do we will be able to identify the needs if our clients..we should treat them like a member of our family....

indeed, a very inspiring article. as i was reading my classmates comment, i agreed to them that the word NURSING is all about CARE. a nurse is useless unless she doesn't know how to care for it's client. she / he will not be effective enough to help his / her client about their health care needs.

the world of nursing revolves around it's care to the patient. attaining the possibilities and goals of their health care plan. with this, communication between the client and the nurse is very important. a nurse cannot carry out any plans, or even diagnosis, if he / she doesn't have enough rapport with his / her client. during our duty, our CI first advise to us is to build rapport to our patient. it is also written to our books in nursing. this is because, a nurse cannot obtain his / her needed information of the patient unless he / she builds rapport to the patient. a nurse cannot always rely on the patient's chart. he / she should also know what the patient's thoughts and feeling about his health status. and through this rapport, the patient can realize that the nurse cares for him whenevr the nurse enters his / her room.

caring comprises the biggest part in nursing profession..it is not only a way of relieving our client but also a way of communicating with them,. through caring a little "thank you" from them would mean so much to a nurse.. proper caring would help us in gaining their trust thus we earn cooperation from them.. we should not let ourselves to only focus in the pain that they feel but how these pain affect them emotionally and socially..
having this article, it would mean so much to a nurse whose rendering care to a client comes from the heart,.
